Vocabulary becomes useful when you can retrieve it, place it in a natural phrase, and choose it for the right meaning. That requires more than rereading a word list.

Save the phrase, not only the word

Record the common partners, grammar pattern, register, and one personal example. For “significant,” that might include “a significant increase” and “significantly higher than.”

Use spaced retrieval

Try to recall the phrase before looking at the answer. Revisit it after a day, several days, and then a week. Retrieval makes the memory stronger than passive review.

  • Write one original sentence.
  • Say the example aloud.
  • Use the phrase in a short IELTS-style response.
  • Remove words you consistently use incorrectly and relearn them in context.

Prioritise precision

A familiar, accurate word is better than an unusual word used incorrectly. Expand range gradually while protecting clarity and control.
